LEVON I
(1198-1219)

Baron Levon II was crowned as King Levon I on January 6, 1198.2 The coronation ceremony took place in the cathedral of St. Sofia of Tarsus by the Imperial Chancellor Conrad of Mainz and Arme¬nian Catholicos Gregory Abirad. Levon received two crowns, one from Henry VI of the Holy Roman Empire, the second from Alex¬ius III of the Byzantine Empire.

A major problem during Levon's reign was the succession of Antioch. Bohemond died in 1201, and Raymond Roupen, Levon's grandnephew, became heir. The barons had sworn allegiance to Raymond Roupen, but Bohemond of Tripoli and the Templars opposed him. Levon did not have a son, and Raymond Roupen was thus the heir apparent to the Armenian kingdom. Levon invaded Antioch twice; he had initial success, but in 1216, Raymond Roupen, the crown prince of Antioch, was ousted by his uncle Bohemond of Tripoli.
Levon was a very talented administrator. He was a skilled diplomat and maintained good relations with the papacy, and even with some of his enemies. He established alliances with many contemporary rulers. Levon gave special privileges to the Genoese and Venetian merchants; commerce was greatly pro¬moted during his reign. The Armenian court was patterned after the Prankish court and some offices received Latin titles. Levon was surnamed "the Great" or "the Magnificent" because of his achievements.

Levon died in 1219. Before his death, he had named Zabel, his daughter from his second wife Sybil, as his successor. He had released the barons of Armenia from their oath of allegiance to Raymond Roupen.
