LEVON III (1301-1307)

Hetoum II with 5,000 troops helped the Ilkhan general Ghazan in the Syrian campaign, and defeated the Egyptians near Homs in 1299. However, Ghazan departed shortly after, and Egyptians re-occupied Syria. A second campaign was waged in 1301, and in a third campaign in 1303, the Mongol Army was decimated.

In 1305, Hetoum abdicated in favor of Levon, the son of his brother Toros. Levon was appointed co-ruler in 1301. Both Hetoum and Levon was treacherously murdered by their Mongol allies in 1307. Some historians allege that this crime was committed at the instigation of Armenian nationalists who resented the rapprochement between Hetoum II, his nephew Levon III, and the Catholic church. Oshin, the fourth brother of Hetoum, hearing of the cowardly murder of Hetoum and Levon, rushed to Anazarbus at the head of royal regiment and drove the Mongols from Armenian territory. Upon Oshin's complaint, the Great Khan had the Mongol general decapitated.
